Etsy Treasury: Doodle Day (Every Day is a Holiday)

I highly doubt anyone could truthfully admit that they didn’t doodle as a kid, especially while in class listening to a boring teacher give a boring lecture. I certainly did! I drew all sorts of stuff all over my notebooks, on the covers of my binders, on notes passed to friends, and maybe even on the door of my locker. Generally speaking, the habit isn’t exactly encouraged, since teachers want you to pay attention in class and doodling presumably means you’re off in la-la land. I got scolded a couple times myself.

However, studies suggest that doodling in class ought to be encouraged, not frowned upon. Research has shown that doodling can actually increase the amount of information a student retains during a lesson. The theory goes that doodling uses just enough of your mental capacity to keep you occupied while still leaving you capable of listening to the teacher, thus you’re still able to pay attention passively. If you’re not doodling, you might get distracted and start daydreaming which uses up more of your brain’s processing power, leaving you more likely to completely ignore the lecture.

I don’t doodle nearly as much as I used to, but I do sometimes sketch little pictures when I’m on the phone with a client or waiting for a large file to save or process. I also have a sketchbook, though I use it more to plan and design craft projects more than as a true artistic space. Even so, I think it’s important to celebrate Doodle Day, as it’s such a simple exercise in creativity and expression. There are no rules, just grab a writing implement and a piece of paper and draw whatever you feel.

I’m sure you don’t need me to tell you that there are tons of talented artists with shops on Etsy, but finding art that I felt truly embodies the free, anything-goes spirit of doodling was a little tougher than I expected. I suppose many people view doodling as an informal artform that’s not necessarily meant to be shared with the world. That being said, there are still some gorgeous examples of abstract doodle-style art in this collection, and I urge you to check out some of these featured pieces as well as the shops they come from! Etsy Treasury: Pig Day (Every Day is a Holiday)

Pig Day gives us the opportunity to honor an animal which is rather unique. Pigs are delicious, adorable and pretty darn smart to boot! At the same time, pigs have also come to symbolize filth and gluttony due to their love of mud baths and their willingness to eat just about anything.

Aside from their obvious nutritional contributions to humankind, pigs have also played a part in our culture. They have their own fairy tale (The Three Little Pigs) and have served as inspiration for music (including “Pigs on a Wing” by Pink Floyd and “March of the Pigs” by Nine Inch Nails). A runt piglet is the main character in the unforgettable children’s book Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. That story always makes me cry!

You can celebrate Pig Day in a few ways: you can show some extra love to a pet or farm pig that’s near and dear to you, or you can have some extra bacon in your breakfast (and lunch and dinner). You can also check out the treasury and show some love to the shops responsible for these precious porcine offerings! Etsy Treasury: Madly In Love With Me Day (Every Day is a Holiday)

The days leading up to Valentine’s Day can be stressful for some people. Perhaps their significant other has high expectations for the holiday that must be met in order to avoid sleeping on the couch. Maybe they’re single, and having hearts and lovey-dovey imagery plastered everywhere only reminds them of their own loneliness. Or the scenario is more of a deep desire to show someone how much they really care, but finding that absolutely perfect, beyond-anything-ever-dreamed-of gift is proving difficult. But put all that aside on the day before Valentine’s Day, and turn that focus on you! Today is Madly In Love with Me Day, where we’re reminded of the importance of loving ourselves. After all, you can’t truly love others unless you love yourself, too.

This treasury is dedicated to… well, me! Within it are clues as to a few of the things I’m most passionate about in my life: paisleys, sushi, music, natural sciences (particularly astronomy), and of course, the color purple. So take a look at the collection, and perhaps you’ll learn a little bit about me. Remember to show the shops some V-Day love, and visit my other Every Day is a Holiday Treasuries here!
