As busy humans, it’s easy to take for granted one of the things that has made our species so successful. Sure we’re intelligent, resourceful, adaptable, communicative, and whatnot. But we wouldn’t be able to do a fraction of what we do if we didn’t have opposable thumbs. Without them we wouldn’t be able to grab and hold things, making building, hunting and farming very difficult tasks.
What would happen if our cats and dogs had opposable thumbs, too? What sort of things would they grab onto and hold? That’s what What If Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day is all about: What kind of mischief would they get into, and would we relate to them even more than we do now?
This treasury allowed me to explore some of Etsy’s fine artists and illustrators. There are many that specialize in pet portraits and caricatures, but it proved difficult to specifically find cats and dogs holding something in their hands as if they had opposable thumbs. What I did find is awesome! Luke and Leia French bulldogs, anyone? A cat toasting with a martini? A dog working at a cafe? Musically inclined pets? Fun! “Every Day is a Holiday” is my Etsy Treasury project for 2014. I’m hoping to find unique and beautiful items that exemplify the holiday of the day—the sillier and weirder, the better! What’s better than finding something worth celebrating each and every day?
