Tootsie is my dainty little fifteen-year-old tuxedo kitty. I say dainty because she’s barely 6.5 pounds. She’s so furry though, that you probably wouldn’t guess she was so tiny unless you pet her or picked her up. She weighed 10 pounds when I first took her in, and the slow weight loss has been concerning, especially given her age. But I take her to the vet regularly, and given that she does still eat (granted, she is a bit picky) and is in good health otherwise, we take it in stride.
A couple years ago, she was diagnosed with an enlarged left ventricle and was put on enalapril to help reduce the workload on her heart. The tally so far for the veterinary cardiologist visits, sonograms and medication is a couple thousand dollars, and she still needs periodic sonograms ($$$!) to ensure her heart is doing well. Though I don’t live at or below the poverty level, I can confidently say that I don’t have a whole lot of money. My husband and I live fairly frugally and put lots of thought into big purchases. But the price tag for Tootsie’s vet bills was never open for discussion. It was simply a given that we would do whatever we can to ensure she was healthy and happy. Why? Because we love her. Is she the perfect cat? Hell no. Frankly, she’s rather dumb and her litter habits aren’t the best. But we still love her. If she’s diagnosed with cancer or requires some expensive surgery or treatment, as long as Tootsie isn’t suffering in pain and my checkbook or credit card can cover it, we will do what we can for her. Of course, it’s because we love her. Would a parent not do everything in their power to do what was needed for the sake of their children, even if their children weren’t “perfect”? Of course! Why? Because they love them. Aren’t pets just children that happen to not be human?
So to honor all you loving and responsible pet owners out there, today is Love Your Pet Day. I know you love them every day anyway, but today give your furry (or feathered or scaled or bare-skinned) kid something extra special, whether it’s a couple extra tasty treats, extra long belly rubs, or a stylish and comfy new bed (though we all know they’ll probably still prefer to sleep with or on you). Take a look at the treasury for some inspiration, and show the shops some love, too! You can also check out my other Every Day is a Holiday treasuries here!

“Every Day is a Holiday” is my Etsy Treasury project for 2014. I’m hoping to find unique and beautiful items that exemplify the holiday of the day—the sillier and weirder, the better! What’s better than finding something worth celebrating each and every day?
